dreamwidth, OpenID, and comments with links

So, the Dreamwidth folk seem to be of the view that if they permit OpenID commenters to include html hyperlinks then the site will be taken over by spammers. If you have an opinion on this, you might want to take a look here:

I doubt it's as cut and dried as that, but the argument is not entirely without merit, either. We do see that creation of accounts is one of the points at which we try to choke off spammers, and it is possible for a domain owner to create an infinite number of openid accounts.

I'm not personally convinced that the ability to use HTML markup adds any real value to email or blog posts, so it doesn't seem like much of a loss.
